Charlie Hebdo Response

Hi mom and dad, There has been a terrible event that recently occurred in France. At the magazine headquarters of Charlie Hebdo on wednesday, 12 staff members were shot by 4 muslim extremist for publishing offensive comics about the Islam religion. I think that this was completely unjustified and wrong in every way. One of our well known human rights is freedom of speech, which includes freedom of press. This means that humans are allowed to express their feelings with words and images however they please. These comics, though offensive, were protected by this birth-given right. Therefore, the killing of innocent people was unjust, cruel, and pointless. If the muslims were trying to make their religion look better, they horribly failed. Now, the popular belief that muslims have terrorizing intents is conceived to be more true than ever. These 4 killers not only made themselves look bad, but also Islam as a religion. I can see how they would be terribly offended by these comics, but expressing their discontentment with violence was not the right thing to do at all. There could have been many different outcomes resulting in drastically better situations. Also, now Charlie Hebdo is receiving more time in the limelight than it has before. People are making generous donations to the magazine as a result of what happened. The only thing that the muslims accomplished is killing respected and innocent people, which was not even close to worth it. This event has become a national social issue, and has been the spark to many conversations. I’m sure you guys have heard about it in the news by now, but I am writing to you to let you know that I am alright, and I wanted to share my thoughts with you. Many french protests have also been taking place, along with moments of silence with the slogan, “Je suis Charlie Hebdo” to show their support. I do hope that you have the time to write back and express your concern over the matter. All the best, Salem
